Java Edition:1.18 Discontinued Biomes

In 1.18 Experimental Snapshot 1, 28 different biomes stopped generating in the world. All of the discontinued biomes are sub-biome varieties of another type of biome. Although they did not generate, these biomes were still in the game at the time and would update if generated in a previous version. Four of these biomes were quickly recontinued while the rest were removed in 21w40a (1.18 snapshot). Updating the removed biomes into 21w40a or later will convert them into their main biome equivalent.

Obtaining

1.18 Experimental Snapshot 1 stopped the following 28 biomes from generating: wooded hills, birch forest hills, tall birch hills, taiga hills, taiga mountains, gravelly mountains+, desert hills, desert lakes, savanna plateau, shattered savanna plateau, swamp hills, dark forest hills, ice spikes, snowy mountains, snowy taiga hills, snowy taiga mountains, modified jungle, jungle hills, bamboo jungle hills, jungle edge, modified jungle edge, giant tree taiga hills, giant spruce taiga hills, eroded badlands, badlands plateau, modified badlands plateau, modified wooded badlands plateau, and mushroom field shore. None of the biomes were removed and so if these biomes were generated in previous versions they will remain in the world when updated.

In 1.18 experimental snapshot 2, ice spikes, eroded badlands and savanna plateau were added back to generation, recontinuing these biomes after only 1 version.

In 1.18 experimental snapshot 5, jungle edge was added back to generation, recontinuing it. Jungle edge was renamed to sparse jungle in 21w40a.

Besides these 4 recontinued biomes, the other 24 were removed in 21w40a (1.18 snapshot) along with the mountain edge biome. These biomes will convert to their base biome when updated into 21w40a and later as shown in the table below.
