In 25w03a (1.21.5 snapshot), new buckets of axolotl did not save the variant of the axolotl it picked up. This made bucket of axolotls that did have the variant saved discontinued until it was recontinued in the next snapshot 25w04a.

Obtaining

In 25w03a, bucket of axolotl components were changed to save the variant (color) of the axolotl as a string instead of an ID number. This caused a bug that any axolotls picked up using a water bucket would not have their variant saved in the created bucket of axolotl. These buckets of axolotl without a variant become discontinued in later versions. Any old buckets of axolotl will properly update into 25w03a and save their variant, making them discontinued. The variant is saved in the minecraft:axolotl/variant component and can be "lucy", "wild", "gold", "cyan", or "blue". The blue variant is very rare in comparison to the other variants. The variants are properly saved again starting in 25w04a, recontinuing buckets of axolotl with a variant.

Observability

Updated buckets of axolotl with variants will have 12 components while newly captured buckets of axolotl will have 11 components which can been see with advanced tooltips on (F3 + H). If the bucket of axolotl is renamed, an extra component should be expected.
