Nether sprouts are intended to always be on top of a soil block. However, it has been possible to obtain them floating or on an invalid block.

A collection of blocks and items that can be used as supporting blocks for nether sprouts instead of the intended warped nylium

From 20w06a to 20w08a (1.16 snapshots), nether sprouts did not break when the block underneath them was broken. Nether sprouts must be placed on soil originally but then will remain floating after the warped nylium is broken and a new block can be placed underneath them.
