Java Edition:Invalid End Portal Configurations

Invalid end portal configurations is an umbrella category describing an invalid state of the end portal. This can range from an end portal that will not activate to partial end portals due to bugs with 12-eye generation. A variation of this glitch that is completely dependent on world generation is still available in modern versions of the game and will thus not be covered in this article.

Variants

Unlit 12 Eye Portal

The unlit 12 eye portal was an invalid end portal configuration that lasted from the end portal's introduction up until 15w47c. When generating an end portal, there is a 10^12 chance that an end portal has every frame filled with an eye of ender. Before 15w49a, these portals would generate filled with eyes but the end portal blocks inside would not exist.

Block Obstructed Portal

The block obstructed portal could be created between 16w03a and 16w21a. If a block was placed inside of an end portal and then removed, regardless of what was done the end portal would not light.
