Java Edition:Invalid Flowing Liquids
There are many ways to obtain invalid flowing liquids throughout multiple versions.
There are 3 types of methods to obtain invalid flowing liquids. Invalid flowing liquids caused by world generation, caused by block glitches, and caused by other glitches.
Obtaining by Generation
Invalid flowing liquids from generation can either be from the world generation or from structure generation.
World Generation
- Generating sky dimension chunks from Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3 can cause invalid flowing liquids.[test]
- Floating water from broken mesa terrain in 13w36a [1]
- Floating water or lava above caves, starting in 1.7.4[test] [2]
- Obsidian not generating from water from 17w50a[test] to 18w05a[test] [3]
- Caves generate on the edge of water, starting in 18w06a[test] [4]
- Kelp and Sea Grass can generate on the top layer of water in 18w07a[test] [5]
- Water caves that intersect with other caves cause floating water from 1.16.5[test] to 1.17 Pre-release 3[test] [6]
Structure Generation
- Water generated in strongholds do not flow from 18w06a[test] to 18w14a[test] [7]
- Water on savanna village farmland does not flow, starting in 18w49a[test] [8]
Obtaining by General Block Glitches
Stationary Water Blocks from Melted Ice
Prior to 1.9, ice that melted was turned into a stationary water block that did not flow and did not get a block update. This meant that if you did not update it yourself, it would stay that way. You could make floating water blocks with this technique or create air bubbles inside water.
Sponge Preventing Water Flow
Placing a sponge around water from 17w47a[test] to 18w10c[test] causes the water to not flow until it is updated.[9]
Waterlogged Aquatic Blocks
Waterlogged Kelp, Sea Grass, and Coral from 18w07a[test] to 18w15a[test] does not flow.[10]
Breaking Magma
Breaking a magma block that has a bubble column from 18w08b[test] to 18w10c[test] causes the water to not flow down.[11]
Waterlogged Stair
Waterlogging a stair in 18w10c[test] allows for water to flow from the back of the stair. Any other version does not allow for water to flow from the back of the stair.[12]
Flowing Water over Waterlogged Blocks
Flowing water over a waterlogged block from 18w10d[test] to 1.13-pre6[test] allows for the water to keep flowing across the block. Trying to do this in other versions results in the water flowing into the waterlogged block, stopping it.[13]
Waterlogged Conduit
Placing a conduit down from 18w15a[test] to 18w20a[test] results in an automatically waterlogged conduit that does not flow. This can also be used to get water in the nether.[14]
Water on top of Waterloggable Blocks
Putting water on top of blocks that can waterlogged from 18w16a[test] to 1.13-pre3[test] stops the water on top from flowing.[15]
Flowing Water with no Source
Placing a sponge next to a flowing water source from 18w10d[test] to 1.13-pre5[test] causes the water source to disappear but not the flowing water.[16]
Waterlogged Tall Sea Grass
Waterlogged tall sea grass from 1.13-pre1[test] to 1.21.7 (present) will not flow.[17]
No Update Piston Pull
Sticky pistons don't update blocks they cannot pull in 1.13-pre7, including liquids.[18]
Waterlogged Scaffold
Waterlogging a scaffold block in 19w04b[test] results in the water not flowing.[19]
Waterlogged Dripstone
Waterlogging a dripstone in 20w48a[test] results in the water not flowing.[20]
Obtaining by Other Glitches
Water and Lava Blocks
Placing a water or lava item results in a liquid that does not flow. This can also be used to get water in the nether. This can only be done before 14w25a, as the water and lava item was removed in this version.
Update Suppression
Chunk Savestating
Using Chunk Savestating can create many combinations of invalid flowing liquids. Chunk Savestating was fixed in 19w36a.
Chunk Regeneration
Chunk Regeneration can also be used to create invalid flowing liquids. This will regenerate the whole chunk it is used on, removing any player-built blocks, so be careful.
Vanishing Blocks
Incorrect Water Pathfinding
Water Flowing to Waterloggable Blocks
From 18w20b[test] to 1.13-pre6, water pathfinding treated waterlogged blocks like air. This can be used to get various types of invalid flowing liquids.[21]
Liquid Flowing to Holes
In 1.13.1-pre1[test] liquid pathfinding attempted to flow to holes that were blocked. In other versions, they do not flow to blocked holes.[22]
Flowing Lava on Water
Lava flowing onto water from above from 18w10d[test] to 18w15a[test] does not turn into blocks.[23]
