The mountain edge is a biome that only generated from 12w07a (1.2 snapshot) (and earlier but biomes didn't save until the Anvil file format) to 1.6.4. In 13w36a (1.7 snapshot), this biome no longer generates. The biome was originally used to ease the transition between mountains and other biomes. The old biome could be upgraded all the way up to 21w39a (1.18 snapshot). In 21w40a (1.18 snapshot), the biome was finally removed. Any Mountain Edge biome updated to 21w40a or later will convert to the Windswept Hills biome.

It was originally called "extreme hill edge" but was renamed "mountain edge" in 18w19a (1.13 snapshot).
