From Indev 20091223 to Indev 20100223, water will not flow into a torch and displace it, meaning the torch can exist adjacent to the water. However, Indev levels did not save until Indev 20100124. From Infdev 20100313 to Infdev 20100611, water does not flow at all meaning that torches can exist adjacent to water. However, Infdev worlds do not save until Infdev 20100327. In Infdev 20100227-1433 it is not possible to craft a torch.

In Infdev 20100615, water flows and randomly ticks, meaning water receives update even if the player does not interact with it. This breaks most underwater torch configurations. Liquids random tick supposedly up until 1.12[test] meaning that underwater torches could be stored in unloaded chunks and upgraded in a safe version later. 18w16a[test] and after also supposedly breaks most underwater.

However, one underwater torch configuration survives shown in the infobox until a unknown version[test].
