Signs used to use plain strings but were updated to use JSON text components in 14w25a, updating any sign prior to this update will cause null text components to be inserted into the sign text data on lines without text.
Obtaining
Write a sign in a version prior to 14w25a without using up all 4 lines and update to 14w25a.
