Java Edition:Air (Item Entity)
Air can be obtained as an item in one version, and is known to be able to be created as an item entity in three other version ranges.
In 13w01a, the air item can be used as a chunk regeneration agent.
Obtaining
Mob Drop
While ultimately not a discontinued feature per se, this is counted here for completion due to its similarity to other deleted discontinued features such as lit furnaces.
In 13w38b only, air is obtainable as an item drop from several mobs which are set to have no drops.[1] The mobs air can be obtained from are the following:
- Bats
- Ender Dragon
- Slimes, if their size is above the minimum
- Silverfish
- Villagers
It does not drop from any of the following:
- Any baby animals
- Magma cubes of minimum size
- Ocelots
- Players
- Wolves
Jukebox
Placing a Jukebox before version 1.4 and breaking it between versions 1.4.4 and 13w01a will create an item ID:0 (Air). It is completely invisible to the player without hitboxes on. This item can be saved if a zombie picks it up and in future versions can be placed into a hopper. Interacting with the item crashes the game.
Frosted Ice
Similarly to Mob Drop, this can't be updated but it is here due to completion.
From 15w42a to 15w44b, breaking frosted ice with a Silk Touch pickaxe will drop air.[2] This cannot be picked up by player, but it can be picked up by minecart with hopper, from which you can move it to hopper and then into other containers. Interacting with the item in a container crashes the game. Warning, breaking frosted ice with Silk Touch in multiplayer crashes the server.
Behaviour
As an item form of a block, it can be placed, but only if it replaces an existing block - air cannot be placed in air. The sounds are that of stone.
In 13w38b, the missing texture is used as its inventory icon, dropped appearance and when in an item frame, and appears invisible when held, with the hand still extended as if something is being held.
