From 1.16.100.56 through 1.16.210.53, wandering traders trade ink sacs with random data values ranging from 0-15.[1] Any ink sac with a data value greater than 0 is normally unobtainable, meaning there are 15 variants of invalid data value ink sacs. This bug is caused by the id change of dye to ink sac. Wandering traders initially would sell a random dye, which would be a dye with a random data value, where a dye of data value 0 would be an ink sac. When the id changed, ink sacs were now assigned a random data value, but instead of becoming a dye, they simply became invalid data value ink sacs.

Obtaining

There is a 6/33 chance of a wandering trader spawning with an ink sac trade in this version range. Each data value has an equal chance (1/16) of being applied to this trade. After a wandering trader spawns with the ink sac trade, invalid data value ink sacs can be obtained simply by purchasing them from the wandering traders. The maximum amount of ink sacs that can be bought from a single wandering trader are 36 (sold in groups of 3, and 12 trades before locked). These wandering traders can be updated into future versions to buy these ink sacs in later versions, however this is only temporary as wandering traders have a despawn timer.

Observing

The data value of an ink sac is not directly observable, however there are still methods to disambiguate it from data value 0 ink sacs. Ink sacs of varying data values will not be able to be stacked with ink sacs of differing data values. Additionally, these ink sacs cannot be used as crafting ingredients in certain versions.[test]
