Chests can combine to form larger chests, generally to a limit of two.

Early Pocket Edition

In Pocket Edition v0.7.4 alpha, double chests were not restricted to the X/Z plane. Vertically stacked chests would act like and render as double chests, and more could be placed next to each other to create further oddities, which are prone to crashing.
