Nether portals are usually only obtainable as a placed block, however it can be obtained as an item. Portals can be placed and used as normal, but will disappear if they are updated.

Obtaining

Mining Progress Transfer

Mining a ghost block and lighting a portal at the same time causes the nether portal item to drop.[1] There are multiple methods to get a ghost block.

It is also possible to make a nether portal farm that utilizes the same bug. These can produce mass quantities of the item without needing to be reset.

Trivia

  • Portal blocks can also be placed and used in the End. If a player goes through a portal in the End, they will be sent to the overworld, either to their spawnpoint, or world spawn at about y level 32000 if the player doesn't have a set spawnpoint. After being sent to the overworld, the player will not be able to interact with the environment and will need to relog. If other entities are sent through a nether portal in the End, they will be teleported to world spawn.
  • The item appears as a full block in an inventory.
