Obsidian is a block with high hardness and blast resistance. Its item form is obtainable in almost every version, but there is one exception to this.

From v0.2.0 alpha to v0.2.2 alpha, obsidian drops its item form when mined with any pickaxe.
v0.3.0 alpha implemented mining levels for all the different tiers of items, meaning that obsidian would only drop its item form when mined with a diamond pickaxe. As diamond pickaxes are not obtainable without downgrading or external editing in this version, obsidian's item form became unobtainable. Diamond pickaxes were given a crafting recipe in v0.3.2 alpha, meaning that obsidian items were recontinued.
