To do: Needs more info on the behavior of the item, also missing information on earlier versions

Sugar cane has an item form of the block, which has previously been obtainable through various means. Placing the sugar cane block item behaves identically to placing the regular sugar cane item.

Obtaining

Infinite Stacks

From v0.2.1 alpha to v0.2.2 alpha, the player is automatically given an infinite stack of the sugar cane block item. This infinite stack becomes a single item in v0.3.0 and later.

Nether Reactor

Building a nether reactor in v0.5.0 alpha and activating it will result in the reactor dropping various items, including the sugar cane block item.[1]

Retainability

Starting in Bedrock Edition beta 1.6.0.30, sugar cane block items are automatically converted to their regular item form. However, by updating a world from beta 1.6.0.1 or earlier to beta 1.12.0.6 or later, it is possible to retain this item into later versions due to a change made to how this item is detected. Sugar cane block items can also be retained by keeping them in a storage block in an unloaded chunk from beta 1.6.0.5 to beta 1.12.0.4.

Sugar cane block items that are updated to beta 1.6.0.5 – beta 1.6.0.8 are not retainable into later versions due to the aforementioned change to how they are detected.
