Chests can combine to form larger chests, generally to a limit of two, but exploits can increase this to five.

If the bonus chest was broken in a world with them set, for some version range, the bonus chest would try and regenerate. It would even regenerate in areas with existing chests, and form connections as a result. A checkerboard pattern of chests could result in the bonus chest appearing in the middle of up to four other chests, resulting in a quintuple chest.
