Bubble columns are only supposed to exist as blocks, however the bubble column item could be obtained with multiple methods.

Obtaining

Mining Progress Transfer

Building a special contraption will allow you to obtain the bubble column item. This works via mining progress transfer, where if a block replaces another block you mine on the same tick that it is replaced, the block that it is replaced with will drop instead.

Gravity Block Conversion

The water item can be obtained via gravity block conversion, which can be performed from beta 1.16.0.52 through beta 1.16.100.52.

Mining Transfer

By building the following contraption, the player will be able to obtain the bubble column item in survival mode.

The previous videos (7:29 - 10:49 for the first video) demonstrates how to obtain the bubble column item in Minecraft. This method works from 1.20.32 - now.

Trivia

• In previous versions, the bubble column item could be placed over magma and soul sand, allowing for bubble columns in the nether. Attempting to place one in the current version will not work or use up an item.
• The name displayed for the item in-game is "tile.bubble_column.name".
