End Gateways are only supposed to be blocks, but can be obtained as an item with multiple methods.

Obtaining

Water Removal

Placing a stair facing an end gateway block and placing water from beta 1.2.3.3 to 1.2.13.60 will result in the end gateway dropping as an item.

Wither

From Beta 1.10.0.3 through 1.12.1, end portal gateway items could be obtained in survival mode if a wither blew them up. For more information, refer to the following video.

Gravity Block Conversion

End Gateways can be obtained via gravity block conversion. This method can be done until 1.16.100.
