Short Grass.png

Invalid data value grass is a variant of grass with an appearance identical to that of short grass, but with "Fern" as its displayed name. In versions prior to the inventory using block states, this item has a numeric ID of 31 and a damage value of 0. After the implementation of block states, this item has a namespaced ID of minecraft:tallgrass, with the block state tall_grass_type set to default. Invalid data value grass is converted to regular short grass in Preview 1.21.0.20.

Obtaining

Silk Touch

In Pocket Edition v0.12.1 alpha build 1, mining grass or ferns with a Silk Touch-enchanted tool causes grass with a data value of 0 to drop as an item.

Moss Blocks

From beta 1.16.220.52 to beta 1.16.230.52, applying bone meal to moss blocks can cause invalid data value grass to generate on surrounding blocks.[1] The "Caves and Cliffs" experimental toggle has to be enabled in order to obtain invalid data value grass through this method.

Generation

From beta 1.17.40.20 to 1.20.81, invalid data value grass is able to generate in meadow biomes. From beta 1.17.40.20 to 1.17.41, the "Caves and Cliffs" experimental toggle has to be enabled in order for meadow biomes to generate.
