Java Edition:Invalid Data Value Grass
Invalid Data Value Grass is grass (shrub) with data values 0 and 3+. They normally only exist in values 1 and 2 which are the grass and the fern respectively. The block form of the data values 3-15 was deleted in 14w26a (1.8 snapshot) and the item form of the data values 0 and 3-15 was deleted in 17w47a (1.13 snapshot).
Obtaining
Indev
A player must first use Indev item chests from versions Indev 20100124-1 to Indev 20100128 to obtain purple cloth. Once purple cloth is obtained, the world must be updated to Infdev 20100327 where preserved data value transmutation can then be used to obtain DVs 3-15. The easiest way to do this is to use flint and steel 0-11 times the same block, waiting for it to go out each time to get DVs 5-15. To get 3 and 4, use torches in different orientations. This will set the DV to between 3 and 15. Purple cloth can then be placed in the same block to get a DV 3-15 purple cloth. It must then be updated to Beta 1.8 Pre-release[test], where it can then collected using shears, obtaining the invalid DVs in your inventory.
Beta 1.6 Test Build 3 Debug Chests
In Beta 1.6 Test Build 3, any newly generated world would contain up to 11 debug chests with every item in the game. The shrub item was obtainable in the chests 2nd and 5th from the left in the 4th and 15th slots respectively, in stacks of 64.
note: the shrub is the grey looking grass, not the dead bushes that come after them
Green Shrub
Using shears on double high fern in 1.8 snapshots 14w25b-14w30c will drop tallgrass with a data value of 3 or a "Green Shrub"
Shrub Conversion
Using shears on a data value 3 piece of tallgrass in 1.8 snapshots 14w25b-14w30c will drop tallgrass with a data value of 0 or a "Shrub"
