The snow layer item is only supposed to be obtainable in the single layer height - data value 0. The rest of the heights - data values 1-7, cannot normally be obtained as an item.

Obtaining

Falling Snow Layer

From version v0.15.0 Alpha Build 1 through version 1.0.3, if a falling snow layer falls onto a block that cannot support gravity blocks, the dropped item will have the data value of that falling snow layer.[1]

Flower Method

Another way you can obtain an Invalid Data Value Snow Layer is by snow logging a flower in only a couple steps.

  1. First, simply snow log (or place snow within the same block as) a flower.
  2. Then, break the block underneath the flower.

This drops a snow layer from b1.8.0.8 through b1.19.40.22.[2] The dropped snow layer from this method a data value equivalent to the height, making it an Invalid Data Value Snow Layer.

Additionally, duplicating the snow is simple. Once the wanted height of snow is placed, simply break the supporting block below the flower. The snow will fall down and also be dropped as an item, duplicating the snow.

Gravity Block Conversion

All data values of snow layers can be obtained via gravity block conversion, which can be performed from beta 1.16.0.52 through beta 1.16.100.52.

Additional Information

  • These snow layers can be placed; however, they will only be placed as a normal snow layer.
