Stone slabs can normally have data values ranging from 0 through 7, however due to a bug in a0.6.0, mining top slabs dropped invalid data value slabs.

Obtaining

a0.6.0 Variants

Placing top slabs in this version and mining them drops the slabs data value equivalent plus 8, all of which are discontinued variants. The below table outlines what each top slab variant drops. Mining bottom slabs drop slabs with normal data values.

Top Slab Data Value
Stone Slab 8
Sandstone Slab 9
Petrified Oak Slab 10
Cobblestone 11
Brick 12
Stone Brick 13

Downgrading Quartz Slabs

Downgrade2.png
Warning: Downgrading
This feature uses downgrading which can result in crashes, data loss, or corruption, and requires specific versions. Follow the page instructions carefully.

Quartz slabs were added in v0.7.3 alpha. Downgrading placed top quartz slabs from v0.7.3 – v0.8.1 to v0.6.0, and then mining them drops stone slabs with a data value of 14, allowing for another variant of invalid data value slabs.

Alternatively, quartz slabs can be kept in the inventory until after downgrading to v0.6.0. The downgraded slab item can be used to place data value 14 slabs in the world and then the placed blocks can be mined to obtain that item form. Using this method extends the pre-downgrade range to v0.7.3 – v0.9.0 build 7.

Retaining

As part of the fix for MCPE-1288, any upper stone slabs in the player's inventory are automatically converted to their respective lower slabs when the player enters a world in v0.6.1 and later. This means that any upper slab items are only retainable if they are either placed in a storage block entity or dropped as an item before exiting the world.
