Invalid data value stone slabs can be created using 1.2 block transmutation. Stone slabs can usually have data values of 0 to 5, with data value 2 being petrified oak slab. The block form of the data values 8-15[test] was deleted in 14w26a (1.8 snapshot), as top half slabs were removed in this version, leaving only bottom half slabs, and the item form of the data values 8-15[test] was removed in 17w47a (1.13 snapshot). In Beta 1.8 Pre-release, brick slabs and stone brick slabs were added, taking the values of 4 and 5 respectively. In 12w49a, nether brick slabs were added replacing data value 6. 13w02a marked the introduction of quartz slabs, replacing data value 7, making these additions all recontinued features.

Obtaining

From versions Beta 1.7 to 1.2.3, the water variant of the block transmutator can be used to obtain the 2 and 6-15 data values of the stone slabs. Data value 0 double stone slabs should be used using water placed in the 2nd or 6th-15th positions in the transmutator. This item can then be picked up with a pickaxe. In this version, the invalid data value stone bricks appear as seamless stone bricks but do not stack with regular stone bricks or any other data value variant.

Uses

Before the introduction of top slabs placing stone slabs with data values above 7 to create a double slab would result in slabs with the top texture on the side or a "seamless double slab" as it's commonly known as. This meant data value 8 and 9 would be equivalent to the new Village & Pillage blocks Smooth Stone and Smooth Sandstone blocks respectively and would even later convert to the new blocks. It should be noted that even though multiple data values of stone slabs appeared as Smooth Stone in earlier versions of the game only 8 will convert to smooth stone slabs. Additionally slabs with data values above 7 will no longer create "seamless double slabs" after the introduction of top slabs in 1.2 which are assigned these data values when placed.
