Invalid data value stone bricks can be created using 1.2 and 1.7 block transmutation. Stone bricks can only usually have the data values of 0 (regular), 1 (cracked), 2 (mossy) and 3 (chiseled). The block form of this feature was deleted in 14w26a (1.8 snapshot), and the item form was removed in 17w47a (1.13 snapshot).

Obtaining

Stone Brick Stairs

From Beta 1.8 Pre-release 2 ;) to Beta 1.8.1, stone brick stairs would drop stone bricks with data values dependent on their orientation. The stone bricks stairs would drop stone bricks with data value 0, 1, 2, or 3 dependent on the direction they were placed. Only data value 3 was not regularly obtainable in this version range since chiseled stone brick were not regularly available until their introduction in jungle temples in 12w22a (1.3.1 snapshot).

1.2 Block Transmutator

From versions Beta 1.8 Pre-release 2 ;) to 1.2.3, the water variant of the block transmutator can be used to obtain the 4-15 data values of the stone bricks. Data value 0 stone bricks should be used using water placed in the 4th-15th positions in the transmutator. This item can then be picked up with a pickaxe. In this version, the invalid data value stone bricks appear as regular stone bricks but do not stack with regular stone bricks or any other data value variant.

1.7 Block Transmutator

From versions 13w36a to 1.7.5, the arrow variant of the block transmutator can be used to obtain the invalid data values. The machine should be used on a data value 0 stone brick using a golden pressure plate set to 4-15 with that many arrows. This will create the invalid data value stone bricks which can then be picked up with a pickaxe. In this version, the invalid data value stone bricks appear as regular stone bricks but do not stack with regular stone bricks or any other data value variant.
