Item duplication methods are glitches that allow an item to be replicated. These techniques are so powerful they are often regarded as cheating when used on items that are normally obtainable, as it quickly makes all resources abundant and removes many challenges that come with survival mode. Despite this sentiment, the methods are completely possible in vanilla survival Minecraft meaning they still are vanilla techniques. While a glitch, item duplication by itself does not constitute as a discontinued feature. However, item duplication can become a future discontinued feature when considering nonrenewable resources.

General Item Duplication Methods

Armor Dupe

If you enchant any armor with Thorns III and shoot yourself with Instant Damage II arrows until you die, the armor will duplicate.

  1. Enchant armor with Thorns III
  2. Get a bow, then two Instant Damage II Arrows
  3. Shoot at the sky and hit yourself
  4. Repeat step 3, and you will die
  5. Return to the spot of your death

This duplication glitch does not work in 1.18.10, but it does work in 1.18.203[test].

Piston Dupe

• You will need:

• A sticky piston

• A chest

• A button

  1. Place a piston facing upwards
  2. Place a chest on top
  3. Place the button as to where it will power the piston
  4. Place the item(s) you wish to duplicate in the chest
  5. Press the button and enter the chest while the piston is extended
  6. Quick move the items from the chest into your inventory just before the piston goes back down (This may take a few attempts to do successfully)
  7. Open the chest again, the item(s) that you put in the chest should be in your inventory and in the chest

(Glitch does not work in modern versions)

Nether Portal Dupe

You will need:

• One shulker box.

• One nether portal.

  1. In the overworld, enter the nether through the nether portal
  2. Save and quit the game.
  3. Load back into the world. Enter the portal to go back into the overworld. When you are about to enter the overworld, place the shulker box and press ALT-F4 on your keyboard. On other devices do the equivalent, such as swiping the Minecraft app away, or close the app.
  4. Open the game again. Once you load back into the world, you will be in the Nether and your shulker box will be on the ground and in your hand.

Beacon UI Dupe

Disclaimer: This dupe only works on touchscreen devices, using the pocket ui.
• You will need a beacon.

  1. Place the item you want to duplicate in your hotbar.
  2. Open the beacon inventory.
  3. Spam click the item you want to duplicate.

Warning: Corruption
This feature can corrupt your world. Perform at your own risk.

Grab any gravity block (sand, anvil, gravel, etc), go to a end gateway and break the bedrock above it. Place the gravity block so it falls into the portal, and Save & Quit. Then load back in and go through the end gateway. If done correctly, the gravity block should have converted to a random block.

Minecart with Chest Save Dupe

From Pocket Edition v0.14.0 alpha build 3 to build 6, changes made to the contents of a minecart with chest in a given chunk were only saved if one of the following events occurred afterwards:

• A non-block entity is created in the same chunk as it.

• A non-block entity is destroyed in the same chunk as it.

• A non-block entity moves into the same chunk as it.

• The minecart with chest moves into a different chunk.

This can exploited to duplicate any items placed inside a minecart with chest.

  1. Put the items you want to duplicate in a minecart with chest.
  2. Drop an item and pick it back up.
  3. Exit and re-enter the world.
  4. Remove the items from the minecart with chest.
  5. Exit and re-enter the world again.
  6. The items should now be duplicated, being in both your inventory and the minecart with chest. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to continue duplicating the items.

Block Entity Save Dupe

From v0.11.0 alpha build 1 to build 4, changes to any block entities within a given chunk were only saved if another block entity was placed in the same chunk as them.[1] This can be used to duplicate any items placed in a chest or furnace.

  1. Put the items you want to duplicate in the container of your choice.
  2. Place down another block entity.
  3. Exit and re-enter the world.
  4. Remove the items from the container.
  5. Exit and re-enter the world again.
  6. The items should now be duplicated, being in both your inventory and the container. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to continue duplicating the items.

Hotbar Dupe

Besides the first slot, you will need an otherwise completely empty inventory. Once you obtain at least two of the item you want to duplicate in the first slot of the hotbar and empty out the rest of your inventory, tap and hold on the second hotbar slot for two seconds. A dropped item duplicate of the first slot's contents is then thrown by the player.

To successfully complete this duplication glitch, you must follow the following steps:

Method #1:

  1. Enter the End dimension.
  2. Make your way to the coordinates X = 0, Y = 1, Z = 0, which is located below the exit portal on the central End island.
  3. Make a bridge out of any solid block, preferably a solid block that doesn’t allow mobs to spawn on it, such as glass.
  4. Bridge to the coordinates X = 200, Y = 1, Z = 0 in the East direction.
  5. Place the blocks of your preferred choice.
  6. Save and exit the world.
  7. Reload the world.
  8. Remove the blocks that you want to duplicate, and remove the bridge up until coordinates X = 126, Y = 1, Z = 0.
  9. Save and exit the world again.
  10. Reload the world again.
  11. You shall now have duplicated your chosen blocks.

• Wall Signs

• Standing Signs

Version range: 1.18.30 - now

Specific Item Duplication Methods

Diamonds, Gold, Iron, and Lapis Lazuli

In v0.3.2 alpha, the crafting recipes for blocks of diamond, gold, iron, and lapis lazuli were bugged to only require six of their respective mineral. Since mineral blocks could be crafted back into nine of their respective mineral type, the player was able to obtain infinite diamonds, gold, iron, and lapis lazuli.

Horse Armor

Disclaimers: This duplication glitch is inconsistent. It may not always work.
This duplication glitch involves animal abuse. Do not attempt this duplication glitch if you are a pacifist.

• Horses

• Looting III Sword

• Piece of horse armor

  1. Take a horse and tame it.
  2. Once the horse is tamed, equip a piece of horse armor.
  3. Kill the horse with a Looting III sword.

There is a chance that the horse will drop two horse armor instead of one.

Oak Door

Invalid Placement

In v0.4.0 alpha, attempting to place a door on a block it normally cannot be placed on causes it to break and drop two door items.[2]

Bottom-Half Mining

In v0.6.0 alpha and v0.6.1 alpha, mining the bottom half of a door drops two door items.[3]

Adjacent Cactus Placement

From v0.10.0 alpha build 5 to v0.10.5, placing a door next to a cactus causes the bottom half of the door to break and drop a door item. The top half of the door can then be mined to obtain a second door item.[4]

Potions

From v0.12.1 alpha build 8 to v0.15.10 alpha, it is possible to duplicate water bottles or any potion by drinking the potion you want to duplicate and then switching to another potion or water bottle while still drinking the first potion.

Rails

Piston Pushing

From v0.15.0 alpha build 1 to v0.15.2 alpha, pushing any rail on a valid support block downwards or sideways with a piston causes the respective rail item to drop without destroying the pushed rail.[5]

Moving to Invalid Location

From v0.15.3 alpha to 1.0.4, moving regular rails to an invalid location with a piston does not cause the rails to break. Pushing invalid location rails to on top of a valid support block causes a rail item to drop without breaking the rails.

Skull Block Item

From v0.12.1 alpha build 1 to v0.12.3 alpha, mining any mob head with a Silk Touch-enchanted tool causes it to drop both its regular item form and a skull block item.

Creeper Head

From v0.12.1 alpha build 1 to build 9, the skull block item places a creeper head, additionally allowing the player to obtain an infinite supply of those.

Invalid Data Value Skull

In v0.12.1 alpha build 10 and later, the skull block item places an invisible mob head that drops a -1 data value skull when mined, additionally allowing the player to obtain an infinite supply of those up to v0.12.3 alpha.

White Carpet

From v0.11.0 alpha build 1 to v0.11.1 alpha, when the player attempts to place any color carpet in a space with air underneath it, white carpet is dropped as an item without any carpets in the inventory being used up.[6]
