For a small period in Minecraft, there was a Caves World Type, where the world is strictly composed of caves. This world type was removed 1.18, making it a discontinued world type.

Obtaining

To obtain this feature, you must set the world type to Caves while creating a world. However, you can also perform World Save Insertion, which forces the game to load or generate a world.

Terrain

The entire world from the bottom layer of bedrock and up is entirely cave generation. The world will also have a bedrock roof which is similar to the nether. In addition, villages (and other structures[test]) will generate on top of the bedrock roof, which can even break bedrock.
