Throughout many versions of Minecraft, it was possible to get invalid light levels in your world. An example of this would be a dark spot in your world in pure daylight with nothing to make that spot dark.

Jukebox Crash

In both versions of 13w05a (the Pre-Reupload and the Post-Reupload), when breaking a jukebox containing a music disc would crash the game. When rejoining the world, there would be a dark spot under the jukebox.
Bright Waterlogged Blocks
From 18w07b to 1.13 Prerelease 6, waterlogged blocks would not decrease the light level like normal water block do[1].
Broken Shulker Box
From 1.20.2 to 24w10a, breaking a shulker box as it was closing would keep a dark spot on the ground as a light level of 14[2].
