In 13w09b and 13w09c (1.5 snapshots), it was possible to obtain permanently powered comparators due to a bug.[1] If you throw a stack of items into a hopper that can't take in all the items from the stack (because the hopper is full), it will correctly take in as much items as it can - however, connected comparators won't update.

Obtaining

Items needed:

• Hopper

• Comparator

• 15 Redstone

• Full stacks of any block

Steps:
  1. Place a hopper, a comparator and 15 Redstone for visualization.
  2. Fill 4 slots of the hopper inventory with full stacks of any block.
  3. Fill the 5th slot in the hopper inventory with half a stack of any block.
  4. Throw a full stack of any block into the hopper.

This will result in obtaining a comparator that does not update and is permanently powered. The hopper will take in half of the stack of dirt that was thrown at it, and the other half will bounce off. The Redstone signal originating from the comparator won't update, though the hopper is now completely full.

Additional Information

• A block update adjacent to the comparator will update the Redstone signal to its proper strength.

• The bug also occurs if 2 slots contain a 60 block stack (the other slots are full) and you throw a stack of at least 9 dirt in the hopper.
