Formatted World Name.png

From Beta 1.3 to 1.2.4 the § character could be pasted into the world name, allowing for the name to be formatted. This causes the text to change properties such as its color or style. This is both saved as the world folder name (which is usually allowed to be renamed) and saved in the level.dat as the displayed name. The folder name format can affect the last played time as well if the formatting is not cleared at the end of the folder name. Due to the limited amount of characters in a world name, a limited amount of formatting codes can be used. Additionally, some formatting codes such as §k aren't implemented in all of these versions, so they will not appear until a version that supports them. This feature is discontinued in 1.2.5 due to changing what characters could be pasted into the game to prevent crashes[1].

A unique property of this discontinued feature is that it can be applied retroactively. If you want to format the name of a world created after 1.2.4, you can go to 1.2.4 and rename the world in that version. However, if you want to change the world folder name formatting, it must be renamed in a file manager. This can also be applied to multiplayer server names and server addresses.

New formatted worlds can be created in 12w37a to 24w38a (present) by pressing "Re-Create" while selecting an existing formatted world. The world name field is populated with the existing name including the § character.
