Java Edition:Formatted Book

Formatting is done by pasting in a section symbol (§), followed by a number or letter. This would allow for different colors and effects to be applied to the text within a written book.

Obtaining

Creating

This was possible to create from the first snapshot that added written books, 12w17a (1.3.1), through 1.13.2. To achieve this, a paragraph symbol and letter/number would have to be copied. Then, within a book and quill, press "control v". This would paste the formatting code into the book. Anything typed after that on the same page would feature the specified formatting. However, at some point[test], it was changed so a formatting code would need to be pasted for each line of text, not just each page. This was removed due to the introduction of copy/paste support in written books. This was recontinued in snapshot 20w17a, which added support for unicode characters.

Warning: April Fools'
This feature requires April Fools' versions which may require file renaming or file deletion to load. See the Loading April Fools' Versions tutorial for more information.

During the April Fool's snapshot, 20w14∞, Order Books could be found in the end ships generated in the "Between" biome. The second half of the generated text inside was always obfuscated, as well as the author. The only other way to get a formatted author is the obfuscated author in the Infinite Box Book that is also only in 20w14∞.

Copies

A copy of this book can be made by placing the book in a crafting table with a book and quill allowing for three NBT variants: Original, Copy, and Copy of a Copy.

Formatting Codes

The text can be changed by writing formatting codes before the text. For example, §n§2Hello will display the text as Hello. Here is a list of all possible formatting codes:
