Invalid Data Value Chests are a type of chest with an invalid data value. This method relies on endermen holding invalid blocks as chests use data values to store what direction they are facing. This allows for the data values of 2 to 5. Like most other invalid data value items, these invalid data values all converted to regular chests in 17w47a.

Obtaining

From Beta 1.8 Pre-release to Beta 1.8 Pre-release 2, an enderman could be used to pick up a chest block. Each direction is a separate data value. Once the enderman has picked up the block, the enderman must be loaded in versions 13w16a to 15w32c to set the HealF tag correctly so it won't die on spawn. Then, it can be updated to 15w31a to 17w46a, where the enderman can then be killed and the invalid data value chest can be obtained.
