To do: add all the other persistent mobs from the needed pages page and add a combos section.

Most mobs in Minecraft spawn with the PersistenceRequired tag set to 0b (false), allowing those that can despawn to despawn. Nearly any mob can have this tag set to 1b (true) by renaming them with a name tag. However, there have been a few bugs that allowed for setting this tag to true without giving the mob a custom name, indicating that it had never been renamed with a name tag.

Obtaining

Dolphin

From 18w15a to 18w20c (1.13 snapshots), dolphins have the persistence required tag set to true without setting a custom name when they play with an item.[1] Simply throw an item into the water and wait for the dolphin to play with it.

Piglin and Hoglin

From 20w07a to 20w08a (1.16 snapshots), piglins and hoglins that are within 16 blocks of the player have the persistence required tag set to true without setting a custom name.[2] Piglins and hoglins spawned in bastion remnants from 20w16a and later will also have persistence required set to true, but they will also have the CannotHunt and CannotBeHunted tags set to 1b (true) as well, respectively. These tags differentiate them from piglins and hoglins obtained with the earlier method, as piglins and hoglins that spawn from elsewhere have the tags set to 0b (false). Baby piglins also do not spawn in bastion remnants. The age of a baby hoglin is temporary discontinued feature but can also be put inside a boat to get an oversized mob in a boat after the baby grows up, which will prove it was a baby even after it has grown up (they will retain the persistence required tag when they do so)

Zombified Piglin and Zoglin

Piglins and hoglins can be zombified if they are brought to the Overworld or the End. When they zombify, they will be converted into zombified piglins and zoglins, respectively. They will retain whatever value for the persistence required tag their previous mob had when this occurs, so zombifying piglins and hoglins that have the persistence required tag set to true will create zombified piglins and zoglins that have the persistence required tag set to true. Piglins can be zombified from 20w07a to 1.21.11 Pre-release 4 (present), and hoglins can be zombified from 20w14a (a 1.16 snapshot) to 1.21.11 Pre-release 4 (present). As this requires to have obtained a discontinued feature to obtain, they are dependent features. The adult zombified piglin and zoglin are recontinued in 20w16a and above, as zombifying deletes the tags that makes mobs from the discontinued method different from the non-discontinued bastion remnant method.

Hoglin Jockey

Baby piglins can randomly decide to ride a baby hoglin they can see for 10 to 30 seconds. Up to three baby piglins can ride a single baby hoglin. Any one of the mobs that make up a hoglin jockey can have their persistence required tag set to true without having a custom name from the above methods. When consisting of only piglins and hoglins, this is a temporary feature. This may be combined with zombification to produce more variations.

In 24w36a (a 1.21.2 snapshot) and above, if baby piglins and baby hoglins are transported to the Overworld or the End at the same time such that they zombify in the same game tick and if a piglin jockey is created before they zombify, both mobs will zombify while continuing to ride each other. These are a permanent feature.

If the baby piglin zombifies before the baby hoglin, the resulting jockey will be a temporary feature until the baby hoglin zombifies, unless the jockey is transported back to the Nether, which can only be done in 1.21 Pre-Release 1 and above when stacked entities gained the ability to use portals.

In 24w36a and above, if the baby hoglin zombifies before the baby piglin, the resulting jockey will be a temporary feature lasting until the baby piglin ticks, where it will immediately dismount the baby zoglin.
