Reeds, which are the block item form of sugar cane, were only obtainable in Beta 1.6 Test Build 3. They were deleted in 13w37a (1.7 snapshot). Upon updating to 13w37a or later, reeds will disappear from all inventories. The reed block item will not convert into regular sugar cane. Placing reeds behaves exactly like placing sugar cane.
Obtaining
Beta 1.6 Test Build 3 Debug Chests
In Beta 1.6 Test Build 3, any newly generated world would contain up to 11 debug chests with every item in the game. The reeds item was obtainable in the chests 3rd and 7th from the left in the 25th and 9th slots respectively, in stacks of 64.
