The Killer Bunny, or The Killer Rabbit, is a currently unused rabbit variant that is hostile towards the player. During the 1.8 development snapshots from 14w27a to 14w33c (1.8 snapshots), rabbits had a random chance of spawning as a killer bunny.

Obtaining

Spawning

Due to changes in spawning rates, it is easier to obtain The Killer Bunny from 14w27a to 14w27b than from 14w28a to 14w33c. In versions 14w27a to 14w27b, any rabbit that is spawned has a 1/1000 chance of being The Killer Bunny. From versions 14w28a to 14w33c, any rabbit that is spawned has a 1/2500 chance of being The Killer Bunny. They can be obtained by either generating new terrain, or by passive mob spawning in applicable biomes. Killer Bunnies can easily be separated from normal rabbits in passive mob farms because they will path find towards the player, while other rabbits will not.

One can use a tool called the KillerRabbitFinder by Captain_S0L0 to locate regions where killer rabbits may be spawned upon new chunk generation, as the rabbit type in this spawning method is chosen from a Random object seeded by the position of the chunk and the world seed. It does not check for other necessary conditions, such as biomes, so it is recommended to make a creative copy of your world to search there instead, as you can teleport yourself around to look for a working region.

Breeding

Once a Killer Bunny is obtained, it can be bred with other rabbits to produce more Killer Bunnies. If a Killer Bunny is bred with a different type of rabbit, the baby has a 50% chance of being a Killer Bunny. If two Killer Bunnies are bred together, the baby has a 100% chance of being a Killer Bunny.

Name

Killer Bunnies spawn with a custom name by default in these snapshots. This name is different from using a name tag because the rabbit will also have the PersistenceRequired:0b tag. Renaming a Killer Bunny with a name tag will result in the tag being set to 1, so this is impossible otherwise. Usually mobs with the PersistenceRequired:0b tag can despawn, but as rabbits are passive mobs, they will not despawn regardless, making this feature unobservable.

From 14w27a to 14w27b, The Killer Bunny would spawn with no visible name. If the rabbit was named anything during these versions, it would always display "The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog" regardless of the name applied, but updating the renamed rabbit beyond 14w27b would cause the true name tag to display. Upgrading the nameless Killer Bunny to 14w28a to 14w33c causes it to retain its nameless identity. Upgrading the nameless Killer Bunny to any version 14w34a or later will cause it to gain the same name that a newly bred Killer Bunny would obtain in that version it was first loaded in.

From 14w28a to 14w33c, The Killer Bunny spawns with the name "entity.KillerBunny.name". Unlike the nameless variant, this name is retained after updating. During these versions, regular rabbits with this name could also be obtained.

Baby Killer Bunnies spawned with breeding from 14w34a to 17w50a spawn with "The Killer Bunny" in the language it is spawned in with. There are many possible names in the different default languages of Minecraft. Using resource packs allow its name to be changed to nearly anything, including normally impossible names such as names over the anvil character limit and names that only include spaces. Bluecrab2's killer bunnies resource pack can be used as a template to change their name.

Baby Killer Bunnies spawned with breeding in 18w01a will have the translation string {"translate":"entity.KillerBunny.name"}. This translation string will work in 18w01a, but in 18w02a and later, the translation string stops working and it will only display "entity.KillerBunny.name".

Baby Killer Bunnies spawned with breeding from 18w02a to 18w19b have the name "The Killer Bunny", regardless of the language.

Baby Killer Bunnies spawned with breeding from 18w20a to 24w20a (present) will have the translation string {"translate":"entity.minecraft.killer_bunny"}. This translation string works to display the name of the Killer Bunnies depending on the language of the player.

In 18w21b and 18w22a a bug caused all names to get more characters added to it.[1] This allowed the Name to become {"text":"<name here>"} without changing the PersistenceRequired tag, therefore doubling the possible names. Using downgrading, this rule can be repeated multiple times by downgrading to the version and having the same pre-fix and suffix to be added along with several characters changing.

Furthermore, naming The Killer Bunny "Toast" will cause the Toast rabbit texture to override The Killer Bunny texture.

Texture

The texture of The Killer Bunny has changed several times, at one point including blood.
