Unknown is a technical block. It is not supposed to be obtained in normal gameplay, however it can be obtained in a few ways.

Obtaining

Cut Copper Blocks

Placing any cut copper block in 1.16.220.51 beta with Experimental Gameplay turned on, and then updating the world to 1.16.220.52 will result in the placed copper blocks turning into the Unknown block.

Gravity Block Conversion

Unknown can be obtained via gravity block conversion.[test] This method can be done until 1.16.100.

Mangrove Propagules

Generating mangrove propagules in 1.19.0.26 beta, and then updating the world to 1.19.0.28 will result in the propagules converting in to Unknown blocks.

Commands

Warning: Cheats
This uses features that are normally behind the cheats toggle such as commands or creative which may be dangerous. Perform at your own risk.

From beta 1.16.100.59 to beta 1.20.20.23, the Unknown block could be placed with the /setblock or /fill commands and then be destroyed in Survival mode to obtain its item form.[1] This could be done in previous versions without operator permissions using the target selector bug.
