To do: From Beta 1.5 to Beta 1.6 Test Build 3 game didn't allow for placing solid blocks on layer 127, making full blocks placed on layer 127 before Beta 1.5 discontinued.

Before the build limit was raised from 128 to 256 in 12w07a, the world could save blocks one higher than the player's build limit of 127. There were several methods to get blocks on this top layer above the build limit.

Obtaining

Far Lands Generation

The wooden planks are placed as high as the player can build, the Far Lands' grass blocks are one block higher at y 128.

The top of the Far Lands generate 1 block above the build limit. The Far Lands generate from Infdev 20100327 to Beta 1.7.3. This is recontinued when the build limit increases in 12w07a.

Glass Pillar

Glass Pillars generate above every stronghold in Beta 1.9 Pre-release 3, one will always generate at 0,0 making them easy to find.

Glass pillars are 1x1 columns made entirely of glass. Two of them generated above each stronghold. They stretched from the one block above build height limit to the upper corner of the stronghold room. One of them always led to the portal room and the other always led to a spiral staircase. The reason for adding them was locating strongholds. They have been removed with the introduction of eye of ender stronghold locating ability.
