Java Edition:Cloth
Cloth is the predecessor to wool. It used the same texture as wool, except with different colors. Each color of Cloth had its own distinct ID, rather than the same ID with different data values, as wool would later use. In Infdev 20100624, all Cloth was removed, except Light Gray Cloth, which was converted into white wool.
Obtaining
Classic Creative Inventory
From Classic 0.0.20a (cloth added) to Classic 0.0.23a_01 and Classic 0.28 to Classic 0.30-c, all colors of cloth can be obtained from the creative inventory of classic. It was not obtainable from Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST to Classic 0.27 SURVIVAL TEST since all of these versions were survival instead of creative.
Indev Item Chests
From Indev 0.31 20100124-2119 to Indev 0.31 20100128 new worlds would generate with the Indev House, and inside the house were debug chests. Between Indev 20100124 and Indev 20100125 the chests held items in stacks of 99, while in Indev 20100128 the chests held items in stacks of 100. Cloth was one of the such items that generated inside the debug chests. This is the last method to obtain all the colors of cloth. Only the white, gray, and light gray cloth colors are available using later methods.
Sheep
Starting with the addition of sheep in Classic 0.28, they drop cloth when punched in survival mode. Originally, sheep only dropped white cloth. Starting in Indev 20100211, sheep drop 1-3 white, gray, or light gray cloth upon being hit. This was changed in Indev 20100223 so that sheep would only drop light gray cloth. When cloth was removed, sheep started to drop white wool instead of light gray cloth. Later on sheep stopped losing their wool when hit in Beta 1.7, instead requiring shears, or to be killed.
Crafting
In Indev 0.31 20100201-0025 cloth received a crafting recipe, allowing light gray cloth to be crafted with 9 string. This recipe was kept for wool when it replaced cloth up until Beta 1.6.5. From Beta 1.6.6 to 1.21.4 (present) the amount of string used to craft wool was reduced to 4.
Conversion
Storing cloth in unloaded chunks or inventories will convert them into different items in later versions, due to their item IDs being reused for the new items.
