Java Edition:Empty Spawner
Empty Spawners are spawners that have no mob assigned to them. They have no mob inside and do not spawn anything.
Obtaining
No NBT Spawn Egg
Using a no NBT spawn egg on a spawner from 1.8.4 to 15w32c turns the spawner into an empty spawner. The earliest method of obtaining the no NBT spawn egg ends in 15w31a after several earlier version spans to set it up.[1] Due to this, the earliest version this spawner is obtainable is 15w31a unless the player downgrades the No NBT spawn egg to a version from 1.8.4 to 1.8.9. However, do not attempt to use the no NBT spawn egg on a spawner from version 14w28b (1.8 snapshot) to 1.8.3, this will cause the game to crash.[2] Attempting to use a no NBT spawn egg on a spawner in versions 15w33a or later does not work, and nothing occurs.
Default Spawner
Placing a spawner in 22w44a will create an empty spawner, but will require the player to have obtained a spawner in an earlier version.[3]
Pushing Spawner with a Piston
In 23w13a_or_b, the player can push spawners with pistons if the vote rule mbe or Minecraft Bedrock Edition (aka Movable Block Entities) is applied. When pushed, the spawner will lose its NBT data.
