A No NBT Spawn Egg is a white spawn egg that does not have a mob assigned to it. The spawn egg does not spawn anything when used. All methods to obtain the white spawn egg first require the player to obtain spawn eggs in 11w49a (1.1 snapshot) by entering a temporary creative mode, which some players consider cheating.

From the introduction of spawn eggs in 11w49a (1.1 snapshot) until 15w32c (1.9 snapshot), the mob created by a spawn egg was determined by the data value of the spawn egg. The white spawn egg during these versions was a spawn egg with data value 0, which was assigned to no mob. This spawn egg can be considered an invalid data value item. The data value zero spawn egg was obtainable using brewing stand item transmutation.

From 15w33a (1.9 snapshot) until 17w46a (1.13 snapshot), the mob created by a spawn egg was determined by the NBT of the item. During these versions, a white spawn egg was a spawn egg without any NBT. Updating a data value zero spawn egg into this version range resulted in a no NBT spawn egg. This spawn egg was obtainable using NBT removal until its removal.

In 17w47a (1.13 snapshot), spawn eggs were changed again so that each mob had a unique spawn egg item with a separate ID. This change removed the white spawn egg, making this a deleted discontinued feature. Any white spawn eggs updated into the current version will be converted into pig spawn eggs.

Obtaining

For each method, first the spawn egg must be obtained in 11w49a (1.1 snapshot). This method involves the player going into a temporary creative mode which some players consider cheating.

Brewing Stand Item Transmutation

From 15w31a (1.9 snapshot) to 1.10.2, brewing a spawn egg in a brewing stand causes the data value to be set to zero. The spawn egg has to be put in the brewing stand in a previous version where invalid items could be put into brewing stand slots. The methods to get invalid items in brewing stand slots were available from 12w42a (1.4 snapshot) to 1.4 and in 13w01a (1.5 snapshot).

Enchanting Table

Shift-clicking a stack of spawn eggs into an enchanting table will cause the NBT data to be removed. This method works from 15w33a, when spawn eggs were given NBT IDs, to 17w46a (1.13 snapshot).

Uses

Warning: Game Crash
This feature can crash your game. Perform at your own risk.

The No NBT spawn eggs spawn nothing when used but do increase the spawn egg used statistic. The spawn eggs can be used on spawners in versions 15w31a (first obtainable) to 15w32b (1.9 snapshots) to create empty spawners. Downgrading the egg earlier allows the spawner to be obtained earlier. It can be used in versions 1.8.4 and later.

Warning

Attempting to use the no NBT spawn egg on a spawner in versions from 14w28b to 1.8.3, after downgrading the item, will cause the game to crash.[1]

Updating

The no NBT spawn geg can not be updated to any version 17w47a and later. Updating the no NBT spawn egg to a version from 17w47a to 18w16a (1.13 snapshots) will cause the item to disappear. Updating the no NBT spawn egg directly to a version from 18w19a (1.13 snapshot) to 1.21 (present) will cause it to convert into a pig spawn egg.
