Java Edition:End Portal in the Nether
The end portal block is normally only found in the overworld stronghold portals and in the end exit portals, never in the Nether. Using end portal items or end portal frame items, the player can obtain the end portal block in the Nether.
Obtaining
End Portal (Item)
If the End Portal (Item) was obtained in Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3-1, placing it can create end portals in the Nether, including in configurations impossible using end portal frames. Once obtained in Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3-1, it can be used all the way up to 14w21b (1.8 snapshot). In 14w25a (1.8 snapshot), the item is removed and so this method no longer works.
End Portal Frame Ignition
Any valid end portal frame in the end can be ignited with eyes of ender from 14w28a (1.8 snapshot) to 24w20a (present). In order to get to the end portal frames into the Nether, the player must place the end portal frame item. This item can be obtained from Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3-1 to Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3-2 but, once obtained, can be placed in any version after. When creating the end portal, the player must ensure the 3 frames on each side of the portal are oriented inwards so that it will be valid.
Function
In Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3-1 and Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3 the End Portal blocks don't do anything since The End wasn't added to the game yet.
From ~1.0 to ~1.7.9 the portals work properly.
Crash Warning
From ~1.8 to ~1.11 entering any end portal in the Nether can do any of the following:
- Work properly.
- Crash the game.
- Send you to Overworld spawn, not any spawn point set via bed.
- Send you to the exact coordinates in the End that you entered the portal in while in the Nether, deleting or simply not generating the chunk you spawn in, then causing to fall into the void and die.
After ~1.12 portals seem to work properly (needs more testing)
