Due to a bug,[1] villagers could be assigned the incorrect tier one trades. Due to the way the bug worked, there was a chance a profession would be assigned an invalid career number. The same bug also allows for invalid tier one villagers, nitwits with trades and tradeless villagers.

Obtaining

From 16w32b through 16w33a, when a zombie villager is either infected or spawned, or when a villager is spawned from either natural generation or breeding, it is immediately assigned a profession, but it is not assigned a career within the profession. However, when the zombie villager is cured, or right after the initial profession is assigned from spawning, it is randomly assigned a profession and career before the tier one trades are generated. After the tier one trades are generated, it reverts the profession back to the originally assigned profession, however it maintains the new career. Based on this there is a chance that a high career could be assigned to a profession that only has lower careers. If this invalid career villager is traded with in 16w32b, it will crash the game, and then until 19w11a it will not receive any additional trades, and only have the first tier. After 19w11a, it can be combined with 1.14+ trades. Since the career is invalid, only the base professions are affected, additionally, the farmer profession would not be affected, since it has 4 different careers, which is the highest amount. This means that upon updating to 19w11a+, the villagers will become librarians, priests, armorers, or butchers. Below are tables showing the possible trades for each profession

Librarian

When this bug occurred, the librarian profession only had one career, however, shortly afterward in 16w39a, the cartographer career was added, meaning the career of 2 on a librarian was no longer discontinued.
