Java Edition:Negative Durability Helmet
From 12w36a (1.4 snapshot) to 1.16.2, mobs that would burn in the sun that were equipped with helmets would reduce durability on the helmet, with a random chance of the helmet durability going negative.[1]
Obtaining
A mob that burns in daylight would have to be equipped with a helmet - of preferably low durability, of any type - and then moved to the sun. The mob would then have to be killed at the exact moment, which can be difficult to determine, due to the damage dealt to the helmet being random. This method works with helmets of any durability, provided the mob is only in the sun a very short period of time, which allows for negative durability helmets to be further lowered. The durability on the helmet can be further lowered until the overall damage is equal to -2,147,483,647, at which point the damage underflows and becomes 0.
Combining
The negative durability helmets can be combined in a crafting table or grindstone. Combining items in a crafting table or a grindstone adds the durability of the two items together, and then adds an additional 5% of the helmet's base durability. This means that for the helmet's durability to be further lowered in a crafting table or grindstone it is necessary for each helmet's durability to be at least a certain value based on durability (see list below), otherwise, the 5% addition will cancel out the negatives and increase the durability. If the combined durability of the two helmets is lower than (-2,147,483,647 + baseHelmetDurability) then it will roll over and completely repair them.
- Leather Helmets need to be at least -3 Durability
- Gold Helmets need to be at least -4 Durability
- Iron Helmets need to be at least -9 Durability
- Chainmail Helmets need to be at least -9 Durability
- Turtle Helmets need to be at least -14 Durability
- Diamond Helmets need to be at least -19 Durability
- Netherite Helmets need to be at least -21 Durability
