Java Edition:Negative Durability Boots
In version 20w11a, using boots with the Soul Speed enchantment on soul sand or soul soil would decrease the durability of the boot, but not check for the damage.[1]
Obtaining
Obtaining Soul Speed Boots
First boots would need to be acquired with Soul Speed. This is quite difficult in this version since Soul Speed books could not be bartered from piglins (This is due to another bug, see Enchantments Tag Soul Speed Enchanted Book).[2] Iron Soul Speed boots could be bartered from piglins, however, this does not allow for the other types of boots. The only way to obtain negative durability on the other types of boots is to find a Soul Speed book in a structure's chest[3], and apply it to the boots via an anvil.
Decreasing Durability
The way to bring the Soul Speed boots to negative durability is simply to walk on soul sand or soul soil while wearing them. This decreases the durability, however, when the boots get down low enough the game does not check to see if they should break, and instead continues to decrease the durability into zero and negative numbers. Doing any kind of damage to the boots will break them, so it is not recommended to wear them after they are made negative.
Combining
The negative durability boots can be combined in a crafting table or grindstone. Combining any items in a crafting table or a grindstone adds the durability of the two items together, and then adds an additional 5% of the tool's base durability. This means that for the negative durability boots durability to be further lowered in a crafting table or grindstone it is necessary for each pair's durability to be at least a certain value based on durability (see list below), otherwise, the 5% addition will cancel out the negatives and increase the durability. If the combined durability of the two pairs of boots is lower than (-2,147,483,647 + baseBootDurability) then it will roll over and completely repair them.
- Leather Boots need to be at least -4 Durability
- Gold Boots need to be at least -5 Durability
- Iron Boots need to be at least -10 Durability
- Chainmail Boots need to be at least -10 Durability
- Diamond Boots need to be at least -21 Durability
- Netherite Boots need to be at least -24 Durability
