No NBT Filled Map.png

Starting with the removal of damage values on items in 17w47a, filled maps were intended to always have an NBT tag containing the ID of the map. However, updating maps from earlier or using NBT removal could result in filled maps with no NBT.

Obtaining

Updating

Updating filled maps from before 17w47a to a version from 17w47a to 17w48a will result in a no NBT map.[1]

Enchanting Table NBT Removal

Using an enchanting table for NBT removal on a filled map will create a no NBT map. This method works from 12w24a to 1.15.2, but only creates the discontinued map starting in 17w47a, when NBT was first required on maps.

22w13oBAAT NBT Removal

In 22w13oneBlockAtATime, utilizing the properties of generic_item_blocks in the April Fools snapshot 22w13oneBlockAtATime, one can strip the NBT off of a filled map, resulting in a no NBT map.

To do: Test more strange vehavior during this version range such as changes not updating when blocks changed, banners, and item frames

From 17w47a (1.13 snapshot) to 20w45a (1.17 snapshot), no NBT Filled Maps displayed map #0, which is usually the first map created (unless more than 32767 are created). However, they would not display the icon marking the player's position.

Blank Map

To do: Add image of no NBT map in item frame

From 20w46a (1.17 snapshot) to 22w14a (1.19 snapshot), No NBT Filled Maps will expand the item frame, but appear blank. Attempting to add banner markers to the map by right clicking a banner while holding the map will fail, placing one in an item frame will never place a marker, and a player marker will never show, regardless of position.

Map Item

To do: Add image of no NBT map in item frame

From 22w15a (1.19 snapshot) to 1.21 (present), No NBT Filled Maps will expand an item frame they are placed into, but will not use the special Filled Map rendering, instead presenting the item's texture just like any other.
