Java Edition:No NBT Written Book
A written book must have some entry, which is stored in NBT data. If this tag is removed via NBT removal, the book will only read "*Invalid book tag*" in red text, and will not have a title or an author. Note the "*Invalid book tag*" only appears in 14w26a and later, before that the book was empty.
Obtaining
Enchanting Table Method
By shift-clicking any item stacked over one into an enchanting table, all NBT is removed in versions 12w24a through 1.15.2. To get a stack of written books, simply write anything on a book, sign it, and then copy it with books and quills. The copies will be able to stack. Copies were only able to be made from 13w36a-1 onwards, so in order to get a stack of written books before 13w36a-1, the player must overstack them.
Donkey Method
Any items placed in the chest of a donkey or mule that was then killed would lose their NBT in versions 13w19a and 13w21a.
