For the opposite, see Understacked Items.

Every item in Minecraft has a number that is the limit of how much should stack together. For each item, it is either 1, 16, or 64. Although in the past the max count has been 8, 32, 50, and 99 for some items. Throughout Minecraft's history, there have been several methods that have allowed the player to breach these intended limits. For example, whenever an update decreases an item's stack size previous items will carry over into newer versions.

These items are reverted to their maximum stack size or deleted when updated to 24w09a (1.20.5 snapshot) or above, until 1.20.5 Prerelease 1 (1.20.5 Prerelease), and putting them into your offhand using the F key or transferring them using the number keys will show the true stack size instead of just displaying as 1 item. .

Previous Max Counts

All items max counts are currently either 1, 16, or 64. Previously, however, the max counts for items were 8, 32, 50, and 99. The max count, the item that was stackable to that count, and what versions that item was stackable to that count are shown in the table below.

Max Count Items Version(s)
8 Snowballs Alpha v1.0.5_01
Cookies Beta 1.4 - Beta 1.7.3
32 Horse Saddles 13w16a-1 - 13w17a (1.6 snapshot)

Dispensers and Droppers

From Beta 1.2 to 1.8.3 dispensers and droppers can be used to decrement an understacked item. Put the understacked item stack into a dispenser or dropper (it is suggested to move it by using a number key) You can now dispense the items out one at a time. To be able to get a 127 stack you need to remove exactly 128 items (if the count is negative remove the count from this number, ie. 128-14 = 114) it is suggested to first make it a -1 item and use the chunk dupe to dupe the -1 stack for the last step. The item in the dispenser or dropper should now be at -128 you can pick up the item and place it into any container. Picking up a -1 stack and placing it on the -128 stack will cause the item stack to underflow to 127.

Indev 99 Max Count

The block item chest in indev all with a max count at 99

From Indev 0.31 20091231-1 to Indev 0.31 2010125-2 the max count for stackable items was 99. In the next version Indev 0.31 20100128-1 the max count was changed to 50, discontinuing any stacks from 50-99. However, this change did not last long and after Indev 0.31 20100128-2 the stack count was changed to the modern 64. This meant that any item during the Indev range could be a stack of 65 - 99 in inventory or container, though they can't be moved later without separating. See more at Indev item chests (WIP) List of possible items: [insert list]

100 Count Indev Chests

From Indev 0.31 20100128-1 to Indev 0.31 20100128-2[1], the max count for items was 50 but the indev chests that generated upon a new world contained 100 stacked items. The overstacked items in the chest could not be moved into the player's inventory (but could be moved within the chest - more testing required) without them converting to 50 stacks. The items that could be overstacked using this method are listed in this collapsible list:

Overstacked Items (100 Count) in the Indev 0.31 20100128-1 Chests

Overstacked Buckets Furnace Slot

From Indev 0.31 20100129 until 14w25b (1.8 snapshot), any item could be placed in the fuel slot of the furnace. In 14w26a (a 1.8 snapshot), it was changed so that only fuel items were allowed, but this included 1 stacked buckets because they were a result of using a lava bucket. By placing a stack 2-16 buckets before 14w26a into the fuel slot and updating to 14w26a or higher, the buckets inside the fuel slot are now considered overstacked. Hoppers and droppers also would ignore the 1 stack limit until 15w44b[6] (a 1.9 snapshot). When attempting to pick up these buckets with the cursor, the game will treat the buckets inside the furnace fuel slot as if their maximum stack size was 1, allowing for stack sizes greater than 16. Bucket stack sizes of 64 or less can be placed directly into slots with the cursor until 20w48a.

Overstacked Armor (Indev)

Between Indev 20100212-2[test] and Indev 20100219 armor was able to be stacked past one as if they were normal items such as Blocks, but was fixed in Indev 20100223.

Porkchop Cooking

In Indev, food, including porkchops were supposed to be unstackable to balance their healing effect. However, by putting one porkchop after another into a furnace they could stack in the output slot up to 64. This worked from Indev 20100219 to Indev 20100223. This will obviously become recontinued later, in version Beta 1.8 Pre-release, when food started stacking to 64 by default. At the time this was a very useful trick to save inventory space on the healing items.

Alpha Snowball Stack

When snowballs were first introduced in Alpha v.1.0.5 they could stack up to 64 like most other items. The next day Alpha v.1.0.5_01 was released which reduced the stack size to 8 and 2 days later in Alpha v.1.0.6 the stack size was changed to the modern-day (except combat tests) 16 stack size. The 17-64 stack from Alpha v.1.0.5 carries over into newer versions.

Fishing Rod Stack

For a long period from Alpha v1.1.1 to Beta 1.5_02 fishing rods were stackable, unlike other tools. According to the Minecraft Wiki: "stacking rods would allow the player to change the damage values of any rods stacked to the first rod. This could be exploited to have fishing rods that lasted forever."[test]

Server Given Snowballs

In Alpha server 0.2.6, every time the player joins the server gives the player 64 snowballs. This server was playable on client versions from Alpha v1.2.3_05 to Alpha v1.2.6. (WIP - picking up splitting stacks oddness & does spawning give them as well?)

Beta 1.3 Debug Inventory

Every time a player dies or starts a new world in Beta 1.3 (pre-reupload), they spawn with a debug inventory that Mojang accidentally didn't remove. This inventory includes 64 torches, a diamond pickaxe, a diamond shovel, a diamond axe, a single bed, and then a discontinued 63 stack of beds.

Ender Pearls

From Beta 1.8 Pre-release (ender pearls added) to Beta 1.9 Prerelease ender pearls stacked to 64. In Beta 1.9 Prerelease 2 it was changed so ender pearls only stack to 16. Any stacks from 17 - 64 will remain and become discontinued in Beta 1.9 Prerelease 2 and later.

Brewing Stand Glass Bottles

Glass bottles in brewing stand slots are only meant to stack to 1[7]. However, due to glass bottles having the ability to stack to 64 everywhere else in the game, they could cause strange behavior with the brewing stand slot. When brewing stand slots gained the ability to have items shift clicked into them in 12w15a (a 1.3 snapshot), glass bottle stacked from 1-64 could be directly shift clicked into the slot, bypassing the limit. Hoppers, added in 13w01a, and droppers, added in 13w03a, also ignored this restriction. When attempting to pick up these bottles with the cursor, the game will treat the stack inside the brewing stand slot as if it's maximum stack size was 1, allowing for stack sizes greater than 64. This can be repeated up to 2,147,483,647 as long as the player has more bottles, but this is rather pointless as all stack sizes are cast to a byte (-128 to 127) upon saving to NBT. This cast can be abused to also understack glass bottles. 65+ stack sizes can't be placed back into a slot from the cursor, but they can be thrown off the edge of the inventory screen to create an overstacked item entity, which can be either unloaded or picked up by CanPickUpLoot:1b mobs.

16w50a (a 1.11.1 snapshot) changed[8] both hoppers and droppers to respect the 1 stack limit and the shift click method to disallow 2-64 stacks of glass bottles from being shift clicked into brewing stand slots. However, an oversight in the shift click code allowed 1 stacks of glass bottles to still be shift clicked in until a bug[9] relating to custom max stack sizes (likely unintentionally) fixed this method in 1.20.5 Pre-Release 1.

Despite this method working after the "removal" of overstacked items in 24w09a (a 1.20.5 snapshot), attempting to save an overstacked item stack in these versions causes the game to crash.

Overstacked Armor Slots

A stack of carved pumpkins on the player head

From 12w42a (1.4 snapshot) to 16w38a (1.11 snapshot) there were methods to get overstacked items into the armor slots. (Check Invalid Item in Armor Slot#Overstacked Armor Slots) These could be counted as overstacked in those slots but this method also allows armor items that stack to go above 64. These items are carved pumpkins, skeleton skull, wither skeleton skull, zombie head, creeper head, and dragon head. By obtaining a stack on the player's head then dragging another stack on top and clicking you'll get 127 in the cursor which can be thrown to mob to carry. This allows any of those 6 items to be overstacked from 65-127 but not put in any slot.

Overstacked Beacon Slot

From 13w01a (1.5 snapshot) to 15w47c (1.9 snapshot), a hopper could put stacks of iron ingots, gold ingots, diamonds, and emeralds into the slot of a beacon. Normally, only 1 of these items is the maximum for the slot and so attempting to click on the stack will combine above the 64 limits for these items. The 65+ stack will be in the cursor.

Horse Saddle to Armor Stand

From 13w16a to 13w17a (1.6.1 snapshot) there was an item called the horse saddle. This item had a numeric ID of 416 and after its removal would disappear if loaded in version 13w18a and later until 14w32a (1.8 snapshot) with the introduction of the armor stand. The armor stand used the same number for its ID but it could only stack to 16, unlike the horse saddle that could stack to 32. So having a 17 - 32 stack of horse saddles in a container's inventory then not loading the chunk with the container, would create stacks of armor stands if loaded in 14w32a or later which are higher than normally possible.

Horse Armor

From 13w16a to 13w18c (1.6 snapshots), horse armor could stack to 64. In 13w19a, horse armor could stack to 32. These stacks remain in 13w21a and later when their max stack is 1. It is also important to note that in this same version range, horse armor was actually craftable, which makes obtaining them much easier.

Overstacked Items via a multi-way Race Condition with Asyncronous Threads

From 14w32a[test] (1.8 snapshot) to 17w46a[test] (1.13 snapshot) powering multiple droppers all pointing into one container on asynchronous threads allows you to overstack items due to a race condition - however this exploit is extremely impractical to do in surivival because each additional item over the stack limit requires another asyncronous observer line meaning an additional chunk swap, additionally you cannot go very far over the stack limit unless you have a quintuple chest because you can't have very many droppers pointing into one container normally. From 17w17a (1.12 snapshot) to 1.12, the player can use the newly added crafting GUI to duplicate items and overstack them. To do this, the player must trick the game into thinking the item you are picking up is the result of a craft. For example, crafting oak planks and stacking iron armor you would use an auto clicker at 1 ms a click on the oak planks in the new GUI. At the same time picking up the iron armor that was an entity on the ground. The full list of available items is below. Equipment and enchanted books can also have enchantments, to see discontinued items that can be overstacked check the combos section of the article.

Overstacked Items with NBT Data

In version 18w19a due to a bug[10], fireworks stacked over 3, banners with patterns and written books stacked over 1 couldn't be obtained, making them obtainable only before and after this version.

Cursed Items

Two curses of vanishing being combined, resulting in overstacked enchanted books

From 18w48a (1.14 snapshot) to 24w09a, two cursed items can be combined in a grindstone, causing an output of stack size 2 which is overstacked if the max count is 1.[11] This method does not work on items with durability. The enchant can only be Curse of Vanishing, Curse of Binding, or Curse of Vanishing and Curse of Binding. The order of both curses on a item will always be Curse of Vanishing followed by Curse of Binding. Attempting to overstack a Curse of Binding followed by Curse of Vanishing item will result in the order being swapped. Both items need to have identical NBT, meaning they have the same enchantments, enchant order, repair cost, name, etc. Beside enchanted books, other items must have the curse of vanishing applied previously from 16w39a (1.11 snapshot) to 1.11-pre1 for this technique to be possible. Once stacks of 2 have been obtained, they can be combined to stacks of up to 64.

Villager Trades

From 19w13b (1.14 snapshot) to 1.14.1 villager trades would ignore stack limits of items in the buy slot(s) up to 64.[12] This allowed oak/spruce/birch/jungle/acacia/dark oak boats, lava buckets, and books and quills to be overstacked with villagers of these versions. Pre-1.8 villagers upgraded to this version range could overstack iron swords, iron axes, iron pickaxes, iron chestplates, diamond swords, diamond axes, diamond pickaxes, and diamond chestplates via the enchanting trade of a priest. Written books could be overstacked using pre-1.8 villager or pre-1.14 villager via the librarian. Ender pearls could be overstacked using the ender pearl buy trade villager from 14w02a to 14w02c.

Unique

There are a few items that can only be obtained using this method. They are only with NBT that can be obtained after 1.12 (the last general item overstack). The following can only be overstacked using this method:

Combat Test Snow Balls

In Combat Test 4 (a fork of 1.15 Pre-relase 3), Combat Test 5 (a fork of 1.15.2 Pre-release 2), Combat Test 6 (a fork of 1.16.2 Pre-release 3), Combat Test 7/Combat Test 7b/Combat Test 7c (forks of 1.16.2), and Combat Test 8/Combat Test 8b/Combat Test 8c (forks of 1.16.2) snowballs have the ability to stacked to 64 rather than the normal 16. If the player updates to these versions they can get the 64 stack in 1.15 or 1.16 simply by combining snowballs to this quantity. Jeb has said that these combat test changes will eventually become features in some future version. If the snowball stack remains when it is introduced, this will make all overstacked snowballs stacks from 17 to 64 recontinued.

Combat Test Potions

In combat test 7, combat test 7b, combat test 7c, combat test 8b and combat test 8c (all forks of 1.16.2), all drinkable potions can stack up to 16. Jeb has said that these combat test changes will eventually become features in some future version. If the potion stack remains when it is introduced, this will make all overstacked potions recontinued. This is the only method to get the luck, slow falling, and turtle master potion because they were added after the last overstack method (1.12). Although they only stack to 16 in the combat test by converting the world to 1.16.2 and trying to combine them, the player can stack them up to 64.

Bundleception

In the first 1.17 snapshot 20w45a, the newly added bundle can be overstacked by putting them inside another bundle. Start off by putting some bundles into a bundle item and putting it in your inventory, fill all other slots with items and attempt to empty the bundle. When the bundles fall on the ground they will be stacked. The max you can stack them to with this method is 16 but you can combine multiple 16 stacks to create a 64 stack.

Any bundle that contains 28/64 slots or less can be overstacked. This is the maximum allowed because each bundle counts as four so 4+4+28+28 = the 64 maximum of the larger bundle. Once even a two-stack is obtained, the player can attempt to combine those and increase the stack number. The amount of possible bundles is extremely high due to the openness of what items are allowed. Any stackable item that existed in 20w45a can be inside the bundle, an entire list of such items is below:

<Insert Non-stackable Items in 20w45a (Including Bundles)>

This method relying on a bug works from 20w45a to 20w48a (1.17 snapshots). The method allows many items to be overstacked above 127 but only in hotbar to be thrown out to CanPickUpLoot mob for saving. The only new overstacked items that can be moved into slots possible with this are honey bottles and certain banners (Ominous Banner, Banner with 7+ Patterns, Block.minecraft.illager banner) as well as their shield counter parts. After relogging the stacks will round over causing the stack to either turn negative and disappear or a positive number between 1 and 127

Overfilled Bundle Overstacking

Downgrade2.png
Warning: Downgrading
This feature uses downgrading which can result in crashes, data loss, or corruption, and requires specific versions. Follow the page instructions carefully.

From 21w06b to 1.17.1, overfilled bundles allow for duplication and overstacking are possible. Trying to place items into the bundle by right clicking on the bundle with an item adds more items to the stack, dependent on the amount the bundle is overfilled by and the stack being duplicated. This glitch allows any item added before 1.17.1 to be duplicated and overstacked.

23w13a_or_b Stack Size Changes

This feature requires the usage of April Fools' versions, often requiring file renaming or file deletion to load. See the help page for information on loading these versions.

In 23w13a_or_b the vote rule stack_size_double_or_half will change the stack size of a random item, this allows for any item to be overstacked.

23w13a_or_b Replace Items

Pink Wither.png
Warning: April Fools'
This feature requires the usage of April Fools' versions, often requiring file renaming or file deletion to load. See the help page for information on loading these versions.

In 23w13a_or_b the vote rule will replace an item in your inventory with any other item in the game. If an item in a stack of 64 (eg. dirt) gets replaced by an unstackable item (eg. diamond sword), the stack size will not change even though the item does. This can be done in combination with 23w13a_or_b Stack Size Changes.

Movement of Overstacked Items

Armor Stand

From 14w32a through 14w32d (1.8 snapshots), right-clicking armor stand with a stack of items would equip the entire stack. Ever since, right-clicking will consume and equip only 1.

CanPickUpLoot Mob

Mobs with CanPickUpLoot can pick up overstacked items up to 127. This is most useful for storing items from 65-127 that typically cannot be moved into any container slots and therefore require this special storage. It is important to note, however, that without chunk savestating a mob holding overstacked items is semi-observable meaning it can only be discerned discontinued by killing the mob and counting how many items drop. When throwing armor or equipable items[test]. The available mobs that can pick up the items include zombie, skeleton, husk, drowned, zombie villager, wither skeleton, stray, piglin, zombie pigman → zombified piglin, pillager[test], vindicator, fox[test], and dolphin[test]. If the player is trying to throw an item that is less preferable to an always weapon-wielding mob it will require that the mob be made weaponless first.

Charging Crossbow

From 18w43a (crossbows added) to 24w07a (a 1.20.5 snapshot) loading a Multishot crossbow stores the count of the stack the projectile it was drawn from. This allows for an overstacked count to be stored as unobservable NBT on a crossbow.

Combining Stacks

One of the most useful properties of overstacked items is the ability to combine them into higher stacks by simply attempting to drag and drop two overstacks together. This means that if an item can be overstacked by just 1 then it can be combined to any higher value. The attempted combining will cause the max count to remain in the inventory slot and all else going in the cursor slot.[13] The method comes from an oversight in the code that does not expect items to be above the stack limit. Normally, the game takes the stack of the item in the cursor (C) and subtracts the difference between the max count of the item (M) and the amount in the item slot (I). C-(M-I) works in normal circumstances, for example, if a player has 20 items that stack to 64 in the cursor and clicks on a slot with 50 items inside it will remove (64-50)=14 items from the cursor stack leaving 6 items in the cursor and filling the slot to 64. However, when the item in the slot is greater than the max count it results in a negative number being subtracted from the cursor and subtracting negative results in addition. For example, a player holding 40 diamond swords clicking on another stack of 20 diamond swords will cause 40-(1-20)=40-(-19)=59 in the cursor and 1 remaining in the slot. If more and more overstacked items are provided, the cursor stack can increase to 2,147,483,647 (the 32-bit signed integer limit) until it overflows and will become negative causing it to disappear.[14]

Crafting Table

When using overstacked ingredients while crafting it will only use one item per craft, and if the recipe modifies the item ie: dying a shulker box then it will cause the result to be separate stacks, the only exception to this rule being applying banners to shields.

Cursor Drag and Drop Stacks

Stacks of 64 and lower could be moved normally by simply dropping them into the slot until 20w48a (1.17 snapshot). Even before 20w48a, they should be moved slowly as moving them quickly may lead you to only placing one item in the slot and keeping the rest on the cursor stack. 65+ stacks would only drop 64 into a slot and leave the rest in the cursor. In 20w48a and later, attempting to place an overstacked stack into a slot will always just leave the max count in the slot and the rest in the cursor.

Right-Click Equipping Armor

Right-clicking armor to be equipped will put the entire stack of armor onto the respective armor slot. This can be combined in 13w04a (1.5 snapshot) with the incorrect armor slot placement.[test]

F Dual Wielding

F swapping between the hotbar and offhand works flawlessly. However, the F button that can work in open inventories since 1.16 Pre-release 3. The open inventory control still works fine with 64- stacks, but 65+ stacks will only have 64 moved if the player attempts to F swap them into any other inventory slot or container slot. The remainder of the stack will stay in the offhand upon unsuccessful transfer.

Hopper Minecart

Hopper minecarts pick up entire stacks of item entities at once. 2-64 stacks will be picked up but any stack that is 65+ will become a stack of only 64.

Item Entity

As well as the overstacked counts in inventory slots, there can also be item entities that have the NBT data for counts higher than the max count. The item entities will only last 5 minutes but can also be unloaded to be retained. They can be created by throwing an overstacked item, killing a mob holding an overstacked item, killing a mob with overstacked items in its inventory such as a donkey, by destroying a container with overstacked items inside, or ejecting overstacked music disks from a jukebox. (WIP: Picking up item entity)

Item Frame

Only 1 item is consumed and put into the item frame.

Number Keys

Prior 20w48a

65-127 however can only be moved to the hotbar by moving the mouse on top of the item stack and pressing the number key to the corresponding hotbar slot. Attempting to number key the 65+ stack out of the hotbar will result in only 64 moving.

After 20w48a

In 20w48a+ (1.17 snapshot) moving any overstacked item out of the hotbar with numeric keys will only move the max count to the destination and leave the rest in the hotbar slot. This includes when trying to move a hotbar overstacked item to another hotbar spot. However, the overstacked item (including up to 127) can be completely moved from any other slot into a hotbar slot using numeric controls.

Throwing Item Stack

There are two methods to throw overstacked items. Either through CTRL+Q or by dragging the stack off the side of the GUI and then clicking.

CTRL + Q

Holding control and pressing the drop key will eject the entire overstacked items. This can be done out of a GUI if holding the overstacked items in the hotbar or done in a GUI by hovering over the overstacked items and pressing the keys. Either way, the entire stack is always dropped and the resulting item entity's count will be whatever the stack was in that slot.

Clicking Off Edge of GUI

Gear.gif
This section is a work in progress.
Please help in the creation of this article by expanding or improving it.

In survival, dragging the stack off and throwing it will eject the entire stack with the same count item entity from 2-127. This works from a player inventory, chest, or any other inventory GUI. However, the item entity count starts to differ if the cursor is holding more items. More items in the cursor are possible from combining multiple overstacks. (more info) The cursor drag and drop is the only way to preserve some overstacked items that are above 64 as they cannot be placed into any slots, specifically the armor slots and brewing stand glass bottles techniques.

Shift Click

Shift-clicking allows the movement of up to 64 items. If a stack larger than 64 is shift-clicked, 64 will be moved, and the remainder will be deleted.

Shulker Boxes

From 16w39a (1.11 snapshot) to 1.13.2, shulker boxes behaved as expected and would simply save the items inside the shulker box. But from 18w43a (1.14 snapshot) until 24w18a (present), mining a shulker box while in survival mode containing overstacked items will split the items inside and create extra hidden slots. While this creates a discontinued item, placing the shulker box will remove the extra slots, resulting in item loss. Do note that the splitting of stacks "pushes" other stacks further down, so this can result in the loss of other items also inside the shulker, and if the slot ID count reaches 127, it will underflow and count back up to positive numbers, which can result in also overwriting the first slots as well, starting at 0. Shulker boxes mined in 1.13.2 and earlier will keep the overstacked items inside, including when they are placed, but they cannot be mined again without the splitting behavior occurring.

Villager Trade

There is no way to get overstacked items into a villager trade buy slot. Pressing the trade or space bar on the trade will only move the max count into the buy slot. This makes using the Overstacked Emeralds Buy Trade impossible.

Using Overstacked Items

Items that are normally only stackable to 1 sometimes have strange behavior when overstacked, here is the effect for each nonstackable item:

  • Durability equipment - when the durability runs out, the count is only decreased by 1 not entirely consumed
  • Water/lava bucket - when placed on the ground the entire stack will be replaced with a single bucket. If placed in a cauldron, will decrease the stack count by only 1.
  • Milk bucket - Decreases by 1 when consumed
  • Crossbow - Entire stack is loaded and the entire stack is unloaded when shot
  • Totem of undying - Only 1 is consumed upon death
  • Saddle - Only 1 is consumed when saddling a mob and only 1 can be put on the horse saddle in the inventory
  • Minecart - Only 1 is consumed when placed
  • Beds, cake, doors (old), shulker boxes, sign (old) - Behaves like any other stacked block
  • Horse armor - Only 1 can be put in horse slot
  • Book and quill - Entire stack is replaced with 1 book when signed
  • Beetroot soup, mushroom stew, rabbit stew, suspicious stew - entire stack is replaced with 1 bowl when consumed
  • Drinkable potion - stack decreases by 1 and bottle is given
  • Splash potion, lingering potion - stack decreases by 1 when thrown
  • Enchanted book - entire stack consumed in anvil, cannot be grindstoned
  • Music disc - Only 1 is consumed when right-clicking on a jukebox but the entire stack enters the jukebox and can be pulled out allowing for duplication
