In Beta 1.6 Test Build 3, any newly generated world would contain up to 11 debug chests with every item in the game. The lava item was obtainable in the chests 1st and 4th from the left in the 10th and 21st slots respectively, in stacks of 64.

Uses
Lava Transportation
While water has ice to transport 64 of it in a stack there is no lava ice. You can use 1 stack of lava to transport lava to a location much easier. This is also possible by overstacking lava buckets.
