Blank_Enchanted_Book.gif

The blank enchanted book is the base enchanted book that is used before any enchantments have been applied. Unlike all other enchanted books, this book doesn't display yellow text, since it doesn't actually have any stored enchantments. Likewise, adding it to equipment provides no enchantments.

Obtaining

Enchanting Table NBT Removal

From snapshot 12w49a (1.4 snapshot) until 1.15.2 blank enchanted books could be created using overstacked books.[1] Shift-clicking a stacked item into an enchanting table would remove all NBT data. In order to do this the player would first need to have an enchanted book as Overstacked Items. Even though this method worked during this entire time period, enchanted books could only be overstacked from 12w49a (enchanted books added) to 15w38a (1.9 snapshot), from 17w17a (1.12 snapshot) to 1.12 and from 18w48a to 24w20a (present).

Donkey Method

In snapshots 13w19a and 13w21a (1.6.1), when a donkey was killed all NBT tags were removed from items stored in the donkey.[2]

Dungeon/Temple Chest

From snapshot 13w37a to 13w38a (1.7) enchanted books in dungeons/temples were all unenchanted.[3]

Enchanting

In snapshot 15w31a (1.9), enchanting a book in an enchanting table would improperly apply the enchantments, resulting in a blank enchanted book.[4] This conversely temporarily discontinued all enchanted books with enchantments during this version span. The enchantments on enchanted books were recontinued the next snapshot.

Natural Generation

From snapshot 15w31a (1.9) until 15w41b (1.9), all enchanted books that naturally generated in loot tables had no NBT tags attached.[5] This included temple/dungeon/mineshaft chests and fishing.

Enchanted Soul Speed

Trying to rename an enchantments tag Soul Speed book from 20w11a (1.16 snapshot) will remove the incompatible enchant leaving a blank enchanted book. Because it needs to be renamed it must have a repair cost of at least 0.
