During 18w21a (1.13 snapshot), a snapshot that changed how enchantments are stored, it was possible to get the old "ench" tag on equipment because of a bug.[1]

Obtaining

This worked by attempting to add an enchanted book via anvil to any item able to be enchanted except for enchanted books. Doing this would apply the enchantments, but instead of applying them correctly, it would apply them under {ench:[]}. Adding additional enchanted books will replace the existing enchantments in the "ench" tag with the enchantments added and the current enchantments on the item. For example, if you have a pickaxe that has {ench:[{level: 5s, id: "minecraft:efficiency"}] and {Enchantment:[{level: 3s, id: "minecraft:unbreaking"}], and you add the enchanted book "Mending", the pickaxe will now have {ench:[{level: 3s, id: "minecraft:unbreaking"},{level: 1s, id: "minecraft:Mending" }] and {Enchantment:[{level: 3s, id: "minecraft:unbreaking"}]. After this version, or during this version via enchanting table, normal enchantments can be applied. This works for the following items:

  • Diamond Axe

  • Diamond Chestplate
