Java Edition:Invalid Item in Furnace Slot

From Minecraft Discontinued Features Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search
Furnace_Slots.PNG

In modern versions of Minecraft, only fuel or a single bucket are permitted in the fuel slot of a furnace. Additionally, nothing can be placed in the output slot of a furnace meaning that only items that are a result of a smelting recipe can go into that slot. Several methods allow different items to go into these slots. After 18w44a (1.14 snapshot) and later bugs can also work on blast furnaces and smokers.

Charcoal Fuel

In 18w06a you couldn't place charcoal in the furnace fuel slot. This briefly made furnaces with charcoal in the fuel slot a discontinued feature. They count as a recontinued feature because the very next snapshot the functionality was reimplemented. The charcoal furnace could be obtained from Beta 1.2 (charcoal added) to 18w05a and then any time after 18w06a.

1.4 Number Quick Controls

In 12w42a the ability to move any item from or to the player's hotbar using the respective numbers was added. Until 1.4 this trick completely ignored all normal checks however meaning the player could get any item in armor slot, brewing stand slot and any item in a furnace output slot. In this version, any item could simply be placed in the fuel slot so using this trick on that slot is irrelevant. While most things that use this trick can also be accomplished via other methods, there are a few items that can be put in the furnace using only this method. Overstacked items that came out after Beta 1.5 are the items that can be put in there only using this method. The full list of items is below. <Insert Item List> There are two reasons why these are the only items that are exclusive to this method. The first is that up until Beta 1.5 any item could be placed into the furnace as described above. This means that any item before this version was obtainable overstacked by just placing it in. The second reason is the hopper trick described below. Because of the hopper trick, any item from 13w01a (1.5 snapshot) or earlier is obtainable except for overstacked items which would not work because hoppers funnel items 1 at a time.

Hopper Trick

In 13w01a, hoppers could be used to get any item into either the fuel slot or the output slot. They could also be used to get any item into a brewing stand slot. The items would first funnel into the top slot, then the fuel slot, and finally the output slot regardless of whether the hopper came in from the side or the top. By putting a smeltable item such as diamonds in the output slot and taking them out the player will be rewarded with xp even though they did not actually smelt the item. In this version, any item could be put into the fuel slot (see above) so it is mostly useful to get items in the output slot. The player could attain the item there by putting a different item in both the other slots in order to force the item into the output slot. Unlike the above methods, this can't be used for overstacked items because the hopper funnels the items in one at a time. The following items can be put into the output slot using this method: <Insert Item List Here>

Updating Horse Saddles to Armor Stands

From snapshot 13w16a through 13w17a horse saddles existed in-game. During these snapshots any item can be put in the fuel slot of a furnace, including horse saddles. They used the same numeric ID as armor stands in 14w32a and later. Therefore, updating the horse saddles in a furnace to 14w32a or later converts the horse saddle to an armor stand. In order for the conversion to work, these furnaces must not be loaded in between 13w17a (1.6 snapshot) and 14w32a (1.8 snapshot).

Mushroom Blocks

From 14w26a (1.8 snapshot) (any item in fuel slot ended) until 1.12.2, mushroom blocks could be used as fuel. They were removed as fuel and this change was marked as intentional even though never on the changelog.[2][3] After 14w25a you can get the red and brown mushroom blocks from Silk Touch and put them both into the furnace. This means that during the period you could get mushroom blocks in the fuel slot of a furnace.

Bowl Fuel

From 17w49a to 17w50a, bowls could not be used as fuel do to a bug.[4] This change was reverted in 18w01a meaning this is a recontinued feature. But you could put bowls in the fuel slot from 16w33a until 17w48a and then it briefly was a discontinued feature for those 3 snapshots.

Warped/Crimson Fuel

From 20w06a to 20w12a, crimson/warped planks, slabs, stairs, signs (20w09a+[5]), doors, buttons, trapdoors, and pressure plates could be used as fuel. This bug was fixed in 20w13a.[6] This method is the only one that allows you to get these specific items in the fuel slot of a furnace. This bug also works after 1.14 allowing the player to get these items in blast furnaces and smokers as well.

Polished Basalt Output

In 20w12a (1.16 snapshot), polished basalt was obtained from smelting regular basalt instead of the current crafting recipe of 4 basalt in a crafting grid. Polished basalt in the output slot of a furnace became discontinued after this smelting recipe was removed. The current crafting recipe was added in the next snapshot, 20w13a.
