Banners normally allow only up to six patterns to be applied through the crafting table or loom, but due to a glitch, it is still possible to obtain banners with seven or more patterns. The only normally obtainable banner with this many patterns is the ominous banner.

Obtaining

Loom GUI Glitch

A banner with more than 6 patterns can be obtained due to a bug from 19w02a (1.14 snapshot) to 22w17a (1.19 snapshot).[1] After making a banner with six patterns, the player must select the desired pattern on a second banner with five or fewer patterns. Without taking the second banner out of the right side of the GUI, swap it with the first banner and the pattern will be applied. None of the extra patterns will be displayed in the advanced tooltips. The extra patterns cannot be craftable banner patterns (skull, creeper, flower etc.).

Warning: April Fools'
This feature requires April Fools' versions which may require file renaming or file deletion to load. See the Loading April Fools' Versions tutorial for more information.

The April Fools' snapshot 23w13a_or_b introduced several methods to obtain normally unobtainable features, including banner with 7+ patterns.

  • The nbt_crafting vote, when applied, allows the player to craft items with NBT data already applied, including banner with 7+ patterns.

The nbt_crafting vote will allow the player to craft items that already have NBT data, these are created with tag items, with the final item being the compound tag item. The compound tag, if created correctly, will have NBT data applied to it when crafted, though not all NBT data is able to be seen on an item. Once the correct compound tag item has been created, it is able to be replaced using any of the item replacement votes which will preserve NBT.

Some cool and interesting applications for this glitch. All these banners have more than six patterns and are normally unobtainable in survival.
